“Carnival of the Avant-Garde.” Folha de São Paulo. September 10, 1989.
[Excerpt]
Founded, like the Performance Group, by Richard Schechner, in 1968, the Wooster Group, as it was re-baptized when the group re-formed in the 1970s, was one of various experimental theatre companies— among them the Open Theatre of Joseph Chaikin, the Living Theatre of Julian Beck and Judith Molina and Mabou Mines — that appeared in the 1960s to challenge the conventions of theatre. The group’s name comes from the street in Soho in which their performance space is located, and their members include Willem Dafoe, Spalding Gray and the group’s director, Elizabeth LeCompte.
