Carmen’s Life Was Film Noir

“Carmen’s Life Was Film Noir.” Estado de São Paulo. October 31, 1991.

[Excerpt]

Carmen Miranda was educated in a convent and wanted to become a nun, but her father forbade it — so she became a nun with a turban, a knife in her belt and a tambourine in her hand. Behind her happy smile, she had a tragic life. She wanted to get married and have children like any young woman of her social class and rigidly Catholic upbringing would. But everything went awry because she was modern and quite ambitious.
